Insurance surveys for yachts and motorboats, Solent and Hampshire

Marine insurance condition and valuation surveys for yachts and motorboats in the Solent, Southampton, Hamble, Portsmouth, Lymington and the Isle of Wight. Accepted by the major UK insurers.

Accepted by UK insurers

Written the way the underwriters want it, with a current market valuation, so you don't get bounced back for a rewrite.

Right level of detail

A structured look at hull, deck, systems and safety kit, pitched at the age and use of the boat.

Useful to you too

I add service intervals and best-practice notes, so it's not just paperwork for the insurer.

Usually inside a week

Report normally lands with you within about a week of the inspection.

Why the insurer wants one

Most UK insurers ask for a condition survey once a boat gets past a certain age (usually somewhere between fifteen and twenty years, depending on the underwriter), then again every few years after. They want to see she’s sound and to fix a current value for the insured sum.

What I look at

It’s a lighter touch than a pre-purchase survey, but still a proper going-over:

  • Hull, deck and superstructure, with moisture readings where they’ll tell us something.
  • Rig, on yachts, to the level insurers care about.
  • Engine installation, seacocks, hoses and through-hulls.
  • Electrical installation, batteries, charging.
  • Gas and safety kit.
  • Current market valuation.

The boat needs to come out of the water for the underneath, so it’s worth timing the survey around your next scheduled lift. Happy to work that out with your yard.

Not just a hoop to jump through

Insurance surveys have a reputation for being paperwork. I try to make them worth having: service-interval notes, a heads-up on things that will need doing in the next season or two, that kind of thing. You get a maintenance picture as well as a piece of paper for the underwriter.

Where I work

Southampton (Ocean Village, Shamrock Quay, Kemp’s, Saxon Wharf), the Hamble (Port Hamble, Mercury, Universal, Swanwick), Portsmouth and Gosport (Haslar, Gosport Marina, Port Solent), Lymington, Beaulieu, Cowes, Yarmouth, Bembridge, and Chichester Harbour. I’ll fit the survey around your yard’s lift schedule where I can.
